Mangú

Another traditional Dominican dish is mangú, which is simply mashed green plantains. The preparation is just as basic: boil or stew the plantains in salted water, and then mash them with a bit of oil or butter, and a trickle of water if necessary, creating a smooth purée with no lumps. Mangú is usually topped with red onion sautéed in oil and vinegar.

The Dominican flag

The king of all Dominican recipes, the most famous and traditional dish, is la bandera dominicana (the Dominican flag). Three basic ingredients—white rice, red beans and stewed meat (chicken or beef)—serve as the foundation, to which all types of “accessories” are added, such as avocado, tostones (flattened fried plantain), green salad with tomato, or cooked eggplant stew, to name a few.

Sancocho

Sancocho, one of the nation’s most typical dishes, is served at parties and special occasions such as New Year’s. This thick stew is made with several ingredients: meat, vegetables, tubers and condiments. It is always served with white rice and sliced avocado, but like any traditional dish, there are different versions.

“ I came upon this restaurant after walking for an hour, very hungry and having had quite a terrible morning. They seated me quickly and gave me a tall glass of water and the menu. The lunch specials are all 10.95 (super affordable!) and give you enough food to feed yourself (I know the photo looks sparse, but I took it partway through eating!) The music they put on is lovely, and a volume gentle to the ears but enough that other parton’s chatter is background noise, and the food is quite literally the best I’ve had this year! It took my morning and turned it right around. I’m writing this review in the middle of my meal, but I know I will leave relaxed and ready to go on with my day. Thank you La Casa De Sabores! Made my day. ”

“ My best friend took me to this place and I loved it! The real Sichuan food. I was craving for something spicy so that was just perfect. :) Authentic cuisine! Quick and friendly service. Will definitely come back again! ”

“ This is the best Dominican for me after about two years haven’t went to a real Dominican restaurant. It was a short travel in NYC with my family. As a Dominican, the taste of the food are really decent. The price for the location is very reasonable. The servers are awesome, I wish my coworkers can as good as they are lol ”
